Build your own Stan Curtis preamplifier and class A and class A/B (mosfet) power amplifiers – see Electronics Today International for articles providing amplifier designs.
I currently have a Perraux 200i amplifier that appears to be based on the same Stan Curtis class A/B mosfet amplifier design.
Digital to Analogue Converters (DAC)
If you would like to play your digital music (iTunes etc.) on your high end hi-fi amplifier you will need a decent DAC to convert the digital signal. iTunes allows you to stream your music from your PC, Mac, iPad or iPhone using either an Apple TV or an Apple Airport Express.
I found this great little inexpensive DAC from Beresford and it works a treat. You could of course spend $1,000+ on a good DAC.
Don’t bother with even the inexpensive DAC if all your music is compressed mp3 files as you really need to have lossless encoded files to ensure you retain sufficient high fidelity in the original music file.
Good old Maudant-Short Pageant Series II or the smaller MS 5.10.
